- Description
- It has been established that the aims of intelligent and knowledge-based system research should focus on: (a) reducing the gap between theory and practice, and thus providing well-established knowledge strategies, tools, and procedures for decision-makers; (b) achieving holistic research that integrates a number of the diverse perspectives of researchers and practitioners. With the above focus, it is believed that systems that are proposed will add significantly to the development and application of intelligent knowledge management techniques and technologies for complex system environments in which global markets have to efficiently perform their day-to-day operations. These frontier technologies have enormous potential to transfer our society to a knowledge-based philosophy as required in the age of the new millennium and global economy. A number of international conferences contribute in substantial ways to intelligent and knowledge-based enterprises, systems, techniques, and platform applications. One of the most successful and longest running of such conferences is a conference series titled Industrial, Engineering & Other Applications of Applied Intelligent Systems (IEA-AIE). Its 22nd edition was run in June 24-27, 2009 in Tainan, Taiwan. This important international event attracted papers in a number of relevant areas such as mining, control, design, manufacturing, bio-informatics, vision, search, robotics, education, management, planning, scheduling, reasoning, and many more. This special edition of Cybernetics and Systems contains carefully selected and peer-reviewed articles that expand significantly on those topics of the IEA-AIE Conference Series that may be of interest to the systems community.
